Papers, 1918-1967.

The Papers of Vice Admiral Alfred W. Johnson contain correspondence, news clippings, reports, articles, and other material collected by the Admiral during his service as the Commander, Atlantic Fleet Air Force, Assistant Chief of the Naval Bureau of Aeronautics, and subsequent assignments that dealt with naval aviation. The collection is organized in two series. Series I is devoted to the beginning of naval aviation, which then-Captain Johnson had a very active role in. The folders are labeled by their subject heading, and are arranged alphabetically. Their contents are usually in chronological order. Of note in this series are correspondence and reports on the highly controversial issues of a separate air force, interservice rivalry, aviation personnel requirements, lighter-than-air craft, and the equipment and establishments necessary to maintain a naval air arm. Series II is devoted to the highly controversial and infamous Brigadier General Billy Mitchell, whose outspoken criticism of the War Department and the Navy led to his court-martial and censure. Johnson was actively involved in the Navy's fight against Mitchell.
